White paper explained (Part 1): AI is now the first information gateway for SMEs

Answer in one line · TL;DR

This series interprets the "2026 SME GEO White Paper". The last part focuses on the current situation and diagnosis: how user decision paths migrate from search to Q&A, the three preferences of AI selection sources, and the ten structural shortcomings that SMEs can use for self-examination.

This is the first part of the interpretation of the "2026 SME GEO White Paper", focusing on the first part of the white paper:Status and Diagnosis. The purpose of understanding the status quo is not to create anxiety, but to figure out what the AI is choosing based on.

I. Change in Decision Path: From Search to Q&A

Traditional paths are linear: generating demand → for search keywords → browsing results page → comparison → decisions. After the AI participates, this path is compressed into a question-and-answer: the user directly speaks out the requirements and constraints, and the AI gives the answers and optional sources.

Public research shows that80.9% of users look for answers through AI, and 60.8% of consumers complete purchase decisions based on AI referrals. Significant efficiency gains for users; for businesses, a brutal fact is amplified:AI usually gives only one answer, and if your brand is not among them, it does not enter the user's selection set.

II. Three preferences for AI selection of sources

The white paper summarizes AI citation preferences into three points, which are also the target of all subsequent actions:

  1. Clear structure: Whether the information has clear hierarchical and semantic boundaries and can be parsed smoothly by the machine;
  2. Cross-validatable: Whether the same fact can be found in a third party location outside the official website;
  3. Can be picked directly: Is there a semantically self-contained statement that can be put directly into the answer?

Note these three things in common: they all have nothing to do with “how much content”, only with “how to organize”. This is precisely why SMEs can participate with ease.

III. Diagnosis: Give the AI a physical examination of your cognition

The diagnostic methods given in the white paper can be done directly:

  • Design question set: Covers four categories: category inquiry, parameter comparison, program recommendation, and after-sales question, with a total of 20-30 questions;
  • Cross-engine sampling: Ask questions one by one in the mainstream generative engine and record the answers;
  • Record four metrics: Mentioned Rate(Does the brand appear),Citation Rate(Whether as a source),Recommended bits(Sort position and expression),Presentation accuracy(Whether the information said by the AI is correct);
  • Comparison of competing products: Under the same question, who is mentioned, why, and whether the gap is in the structure or the source.

This baseline report is the basis for all subsequent inputs - no change can be demonstrated without a baseline.

IV. Self-examination of ten structural short boards

  1. There is no clear information structure on the official website, and product parameters are scattered in PDFs and pictures;
  2. Missing Schema.org structured tag;
  3. The official website lacks an answer page for high intention questions;
  4. There is no uniform caliber for key facts (qualifications, parameters, price ranges, service boundaries);
  5. Unbranded or outdated information on third-party platforms;
  6. There are people, products, and cases under the brand name, but they are not semantically related to each other;
  7. There are multiple conflicting versions of old information;
  8. Slow page loading, poor mobile experience, high crawling costs;
  9. There is no “concluding paragraph” that can be extracted by AI;
  10. The monthly review mechanism is missing, and no one maintains the content after it goes online.

If your self-test results are more than four hits, the priority is clear:Repair the base first, then talk about content diffusion.

Conclusion

After discussing the current situation and diagnosis in the previous article, we will enter the most practical part of the white paper -90-Day Landing Path and Organizational Collaboration, including deliverables at each stage, segregation of duties, and common failure patterns.
